Tuesday, November 22nd (THIS TUESDAY) is the last scheduled camp meeting of 2011. We have important business to conduct and I am asking for max participation. On Tuesday, we will be electing new officers for the next 2 year term - do your part and be there. The program will be 'Show & Tell' where camp members have 5 or so minutes to present a topic of their choice/show an item or talk about what ever they like (WBTS Related).

Other Important Dates:

Dec 3 - Museum Open House. If you have some extra cash around and would like to make a donation to the museum towards the annual taxes - it would be greatly appreciated. All donations are tax deductable. I havent seen the tax bill for this year - but last year's bill was $850.

Dec 10 - Christmas Party / Annual Awards - (Plans will be finalized on Tuesday) at Springs facility, 1732 Old #4 Highway, several miles past Lynches River Park.

We will meet in the rear parking lot of Venus Pancake House between 8am-830am. We will leave no later than 8:30. (Or you could also meet us in Columbia at the Relic room at 10:00am.) Please let me know if you are planning to attend and how many are in your party so I can let Joe know how many people to expect.

Re: 150^th Anniversary of the 1^st Battle of Manassas - Confederate Consecration Day

Dear Compatriots,

One hundred and fifty years ago today the combatants form South and North met on the hilly fields outside of the town of Manassas, Virginia. The encounter that followed became the first major battle of the War for Southern Independence.

The battle was bittersweet. Bitter, as all wars that lead to death and destruction, sweet, in that it was a victory for the sovereign South. It was here that General Thomas J. Jackson earned his immortal nickname: Stonewall, making for us the finest example of Southern manhood. There is Jackson standing like a stone wall. Let us determine to die here, and we will conquer. Rally behind the Virginians! challenged, Brig. General Bernard Bee.

And rally they did. Their actions consecrated the soil with the blood of a liberty-loving people. From that day till this, we continue to stand like a stone wall for the truth and the honour that is the heritage of the South.

Let us dub this day Confederate Consecration Day. Let us remember the glorious deeds of our Confederate ancestors, celebrate their lives and honour their sacrifices. I ask you to use this opportunity to speak with someone in the days to come about these men that we honour. Give someone else the opportunity to know the truth about the Southern Cause. And let's all pray for the Lord's blessings on the South. I am,

Sons of Confederate Veterans

The SC Confederate Veterans Grave Registration program and initiative has been under way now for several years. Many Camps and Compatriots have documented and successfully contributed thousands of names marking the final resting place of South Carolina Confederate Veterans. This daunting task could not be performed without the sacrifice and time that many of our men have given to honor the memory of these valiant dead.

It has come to my attention that a few men find the forms and methodology of documentation too difficult and unnecessary. However, an overwhelming number of other men do not see the guidelines as too taxing or demanding and they continue to build upon the database.

As a result, Commander Frank Berry, Chairman of the SC Confederate Grave Registration Committee will be conducting several training sessions around South Carolina beginning in July. Brigade Commanders will be in contact with and will inform their respective Camp Commanders of those locations, dates and time. All Camps who require special or additional training are urged and expected to attend in order that all Camps may comply with the guidelines and procedures required to fulfill the transfer of information into the SC Division database.

Everyone must understand; there is one method and one set of guidelines to fulfill the requirements of the program. All nonconforming data, which cannot transfer into the database because of improper format will be rejected and a waste of time.

Therefore, the following General Order is issued by the South Carolina Division Commander:

Re: SC Division Grave Registration Initiative

TO ALL CAMPS and COMPATRIOTS, South Carolina Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans

Whereas, the South Carolina Confederate Veterans Grave Registration Committee and Initiative is a "Standing Committee" of the South Carolina Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans as determined in annual convention and supported in the Constitution of said organization in Article XVII, section 1 paragraph G; and

Whereas, all subordinate Camps are expected to comply with South Carolina Division Programs and Initiatives, including the guidelines and criteria established by the Committee as sanctioned by the Division Executive Council and as outlined in the Constitution of said organization in Article IX, section 4 and 5; and

Whereas, the chairman of the SC Confederate Graves Registration Committee serves as an appointed officer and at the pleasure of the Division Commander with full authority to manage and direct the program as it is designed and outlined.

Therefore, all South Carolina Division subordinate Camps are expected to participate and remain in compliance with all prescribed guidelines as directed by the Committee Chairman including the use of proper Division format and documents for transmission to the Division archivist; and

Finally, all Camp Commanders are directed to respond to their respective Brigade Commander acknowledging receipt of this General Order # 4 including a time line and plan outlining the action intended by their Camp in regard to this specific Division Program.

CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL DAY

Gentlemen,

I want to remind you about Confederate Memorial Day next Saturday in Columbia. We are going to meet in the back parking lot of Venus Pancake House between 8:00 - 8:20am on Saturday, May 7th. We will leave no later than 8:30 and carpool to Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia where we will participate in the UDC memorial service at 10am. At 11am we will march in procession to the state house where the SCV memorial service will be held at the Soldiers Monument around noon. We should be home by mid afternoon - no later than 3 or 3:30.

My goal is to have at least 15 from the Pee Dee Rifles there for the memorial. Our detractors are watching to see what kind of turn out we have. What better way can we make a statement to the bias media that there are still men in South Carolina that care about the sacrifice their ancestors made defending their rights, home and country. Honor your ancestor with your attendance. As members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, it is our most important day of the year! Please make your plans now to attend.

Brigade Cemetry Clean Up Project ***We Need A Good Showing For This*** Steve Morris, Camp Graves Registration Officer will be coordinating our efforts towards this project.

Marion Camp #24 will be hosting this years David Keller Cemetery Challenge at the Harrington Family cemetery. The cemetery is located off of Old Stage Road about 3/10 miles north of the intersection of Old Stage and Harrington Rd, on a farm road. The cemetery is located at the end of the farm road. There will be flags up to mark the road. We will start at 9:00 am on Saturday November 6, lunch will be provided by the Camp. I am also providing a link to a map of the Mullins area that shows how to arrive at Old Stage Road from any direction.

In response to a news story regarding the Confederate Flag flown at a private residence in Summerville, SC, the following statement has been prepared for public release from the Commander, South Carolina Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans:

The Sons of Confederate Veterans is a historical, benevolent, patriotic and nonpolitical organization committed to preserving the history and legacy of the American Confederate soldier who served from 1861 – 1865.

Furthermore, the SCV supports the right of free speech for all Americans in accordance with the United States Constitution, including the right to display symbols of culture and heritage embraced by its citizenry provided there is no violation of any State or local laws.

As to the confederate flag and other symbols of Southern Heritage, we believe behavior that fails to exemplify the principles of tolerance and respect is unacceptable. Therefore we encourage all Americans to study their history to understand the motives that eventually brought about secession and the War for Southern Independence.

Finally, it is our shared hope that all Americans, regardless of culture, race, religion or ethnic origin, appreciate and respect differing views thus striving for better understanding and tolerance within our communities. We believe that all people are worthy of respect and we celebrate the diversity that exists among peoples of these United States of America.

Compatriots of the South Carolina Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans,

As most of you are aware, the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum has become a victim of the cuts to the SC State Budget. Although the potential for closure of the museum is still very real, it appears that sufficient funds MAY be available, (through other sources) and the doors will most likely remain open through the end of 2010 until the next General Assembly comes into session in January 2011.

However, the sobering reality remains that monies will be tight in our State for years to come and the CRR & MM will have difficulty acquiring sufficient funding to operate in the future. It's difficult to imagine that our State legislators would allow a 114 year old museum to close its doors, but simply stated, if money is not available what other recourse will the State have…..these questions and many others have not been answered yet, so the "jury" is still out.

Meanwhile, what can we do, as an organization to show our support, appreciation and dedication to our own mission of preserving the memory and legacy of our Confederate ancestors?

The answer is sometimes painful but it still falls on our shoulders. Therefore I wish to share a new membership program, now in place, at the CRR & MM. This membership program, combined with ticket, gift shop sales and donations hopes to generate enough revenue to keep the museum open each year and for years to come. This is, unfortunately, the path that many museums, across the country, have been required to implement.

I always hate to come to you, our SCV membership, for money; it seems there is always a need and certainly one for more funds than we each can afford. However, I am asking each of you who are able to join me in support for our SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum and purchase a membership today. This museum (our museum) is the last remaining and primary vestige of South Carolina Military History. Our ancestors gave much to our State and asked nothing in return; some even gave the ultimate sacrifice. Financially, this may be a sacrifice to many of you. I only ask that you consider it and join me if you can. I've sent my check in today's USPS mail; will you send yours today?

Compatriots of the South Carolina Division

As you all probably know by now, the SC House of Representatives met in session yesterday, 16 June 2010 to consider the vetoes recently signed by SC Governor Mark Sanford in regard to the annual State Budget. One of those vetoes, # 52, involved $25 million for the State Budget and Control Board, who has financial oversight of the Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum

Many of you responded to our General Order of last week and phoned and emailed your State representative urging they consider over riding the Governor's veto in order to keep open the doors of our 114 year old museum. Unfortunately, the 2/3'rds majority needed to override did not occur and the Governor's veto was sustained. The budget crisis continues and more than likely, will for years to come.

Now, what does that mean for the future of our Confederate Archives and treasures? Right now, no one knows for certain the answer to that question.

As a preliminary measure, last week, I directed our Division Chaplain, Ken Temples, to solicit a number of our Division Camp Chaplains to petition our Heavenly Father to intervene and give guidance to the SC House Legislators. I cannot help but feel strongly in my heart, as do each of you, that HE would not wish to see these vestiges of our Southern Heritage lost, therefore I encourage each of you to join with me and Chaplain Temples in the spirit of prayer as we seek Wisdom, Guidance, and Direction from our Father in Heaven who can do all things and in His perfect will.

In the days ahead, be assured that I will continue to have communication with Mr. Allen Roberson, Director of the CRR&MM, to keep apprised of the status of the museum. I would also ask that each of you refrain from contacting him yourself, as he is obviously extremely focused on looking at every possible avenue to keep the doors open; I will promise to keep everyone informed of any developments take place.

And, above all, please remain as Southern gentlemen in your conduct and in any discussion you may have with your legislators. This is not the time for anger, boycotts or behavior that would bring embarrassment or shame to the SCV. We, as the SC Division, will make every effort to explore every possible and feasible avenue to assure the "treasures" of our SC military history and Confederate Heritage are preserved for years to come. Rest assured also, that we have a good friend in Mr. Allen Roberson. He too is exploring every angle and option to keep the Relic room open and its archives protected.

In closing, "patience" and "prayer" are the order for the day; stay vigilant and hopeful and standby should the order change to "rally the troops".

Pee Dee Rifles - Confederate Memorial Day Observance

Gentlemen,

The Pee Dee Rifles will hold our joint Confederate Memorial Day observance with the ladies of the Ellison Capers Chapter of the UDC THIS SATURDAY, May 8th at Mount Hope Cemetery at 11am. ALL members of the Pee Dee Rifles should make every effort to attend. As members of the SCV this is why you joined - to honor and remember the sacrifice of your ancestors. There is no reason that we should not have at least 30 members there on Saturday!

I would like to invite anyone who is available to help place the flags on the graves Friday afteroon. We will meet at the Confederate Monument at Mt Hope Friday (May 7th) at 5:30pm. The more people we have - the faster we can get the job done. This is actually one of the hi-lights for me to have my children come and help participate in placing the flags on the graves. We have to teach them why they are young.

SCV Policy on Hate Groups

Recently, the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, issued a proclamation declaring April, Confederate History month in his State. This action was immediately met with cries of racism, white supremacy and criticism from the media and various members of the Virginia Legislature. Several national news outlets have covered the story and most have made their best efforts to denounce the decree, since the original wording did not include the reference to slavery as the primary cause of the War Between the States. Unfortunately, Virginia Governor McDonnell revised his previous statement and included a paragraph blaming slavery for the war.

As would be expected, the opposition accepted the revision, but continue their attacks of intolerance and malice, some of which is directed toward the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

For the record:

The Sons of Confederate Veterans, established in 1896, does not condone nor support the institution of slavery and furthermore we understand the broader picture historically, that brought about the war. In short, several decades of dispute over high protective tariffs, which benefited Northern States and the concern over the expansion of a more powerful Central Government, diminishing the individual sovereignty of States, led to the secession of the Southern Republics. Secession was merely the "trigger" that prompted Lincoln to invade the South and force them to remain in the Union. While slavery was an issue of the time, "secession" was clearly and definably the primary cause.

The SCV has for many years, declared its position on hate groups and published the policies in our journals and numerous printed materials. Therefore, to reiterate our position, we the South Carolina Division, SCV, republish the Policy on Hate Groups, without apology, for all who may be interested.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans is not a hate group and The South Carolina Division, SCV does not knowingly allow anyone with ties to hate groups to join. The SCV has removed, and will remove, any member who expresses racist sentiments. Specifically, the following is not allowed and will be grounds for immediate dismissal:

Membership in or attempting to recruit SCV members for racist organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan, American Nazi Party or National Alliance.
Disseminating racist literature to fellow SCV members by mail or in person.
Membership in any organization promoting the violent overthrow of the United States government.

ALL MEMBERS OF THE SCV MUST BE AWARE OF THESE RESTRICTIONS AS THEY WILL BE VIGOROUSLY ENFORCED.

Loving the South and defending its culture, symbols and heritage DOES NOT MEAN HATE. Many SCV members are descendants of a varied cross section of descendants of the old south, such as: Native-Americans, African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Jewish and Christian Confederates. These groups' contributions to Southern culture have made the South a beautiful and unique region. To deny their descendants membership in our organization would betray our principles and the very ancestors we honor. We welcome all descendants of Confederate Soldiers, Sailors and Marines or those who materially aided the South in its struggle for independence.

SC DIVISION CONVENTION - OVER-FlOW HOTEL

Gentlemen,

Can you please pass along the below information to your camps regarding the Division Convention this weekend?

We still have room for anyone who wants to attend. We are not charging a late fee for walk-ins. We will honor the regular registration price of $60 for anyone who comes on Saturday. However, I can not guarantee a meal will be available as we have already ordered food. We anticipated a certain number of walk-ins but if we exceed that number - the person would not get a meal ticket. Also note that we have exceeded the 200 point for registrations so anyone who registers from this point forward will not get a convention medal. They will still receive the registration packet and convention program.

The host hotel (Country Inn & Suites) has sold out of rooms. There are may hotels at Exit 164 off I-95. However, we have secured an Over-Flow alternative located across the street from the Country Inn and Suites. The Wingate by Windham Hotel has offered us a special rate of $59 plus tax. When making your reservation - please tell them you are with the SCV Convention to get the special rate.

STATE CONVENTION

The State Convention is now about 30 days away. I need for you to do two things. First, BE THERE! We need your help to make this event a success. Camp members can register for $25. That isnt to much to ask - come on guys, we need your help. We need 6 workers on Friday night and 14 workers on Saturday. So far, I only have 11 people registered from our camp. Below are the members who have registered.

The 2010 South Carolina Division convention is just over 5 weeks away. This year is an election year for the SC Division and elections will be held for new division officers. The will be a constitutional amendment presented for vote to the delegation. Camps are encouraged to attend to cast their votes and perpetuate the future of the organization.

The convention this year will be held in Florence, SC on March 26 and 27th. The registration fee is currently 60.00 and includes the luncheon and a convention medal. On March 1, 2010 the cost will rise to $70.00 until the day of the convention. The host camp needs to know if you attending as early as possible for catering counts. Once the host camp confirms the count with the caterer, the numbers cannot change. The same applies for convention medals. The following is from the registration packet:

All early and regular registrations include the Friday Night Social, Memorial Service, Awards Luncheon and Registration Packet. Registration Packet includes Reunion Medal, Ribbon, Convention Program Booklet & name badge.
Late registration attendees will receive a name badge and lunch (medals, ribbons and program booklets available as supplies last.)

Red Doe Annual Fundraiser - Saturday March 13th

Gentlemen,

I am pleased to announce the annual Red Doe Plantation fundraiser in parnership with the Florence Home Builders Association. It will be held at Red Doe Plantation on Saturday, March 13th. We need to sell 200 tickets for the event and need your help to make sure the word gets out. We must sell every one of them to make the fundraiser a success!

Tickets for the Oink & Oysters are $40 in advance and $50 at the door. If you sell 15 tickets, you will receive a free ticket. In order to receive an additional free ticket members must perform a minimum of 10 hours of service in preparation for the event and work a shift the night of the event. By selling your tickets and working for Red Doe you have the potential to receive 2 free tickets. Sandy Kendall will coordinate the work efforts at Red Doe and keep track of your hours worked.

Ryan Hicks, who prepared the oysters last year will also prepare all the food this year. If you haven't tried his sauce you should! It's called Backyard BBQ. Local grocery stores and the Butcher Shop sell it. There will also be an open bar with soft drinks, beer and wine.

We are also seeking donors/sponsors to help cover our expenses. Our goal is to get at least $5000 in sponsors. Sponsors will help cover costs such as: Event Insurance, Tent Rental, Port a johns, Security, Trash Bags, Plates, Napkins, and various other expenses.....

Please stop by the Museum and see Carl Hill to purchase your tickets. We really need your help getting the word out - this is our ANNUAL fundraiser. Please note the original date of the event was moved up one week from Mar 20 to Mar 13 due to potential conflict with another event.

He is going to show off some fancy fire arms and do some show and tell about the new Division fundraiser. We will also hold camp elections for the next 2 year term and discuss important camp business.

Please gather up and bring all of your 3x5 Confederate flags to the next meeting. We will use them as decorations at the convention. I will supply a safety pin and small slip of paper to mark your flag - so you do not have to write on your flag with ink! We need around 50 flags for decorations. I will take good care of them and return them in April.

Several people have told me about advertisements they have gotten committments for. Now is the time to follow through and get them turned in. Please mail me the advertisement form, business card or information for the ad and most importantly - they check as soon as possible. The deadline to have everything to our graphics artist is January 31st. If you run into a situation where someone DEFINATELY wants an ad but has not paid yet - get me the graphics info and we can collect later. Lets get out there and sell these last 5 advertisements!

As you know the 7th Brigade Lee/Jackson dinner is only 2 weeks away. I have attached a document for the upcoming SC Division Leadership Conference. The conference will kick off on Saturday January 9th, 2010 and conclude on Sunday January 10th.

On Friday the January 8th, 2010 @ 5:00pm, the SC Division Executive Council will convene for business at Camp Kinard.

I need all Brigade Commanders communicate with your camps and put together a list of all attendees from your brigade. Please forward this information to your camps. Gentlemen,

I am writing once again to seek your help in soliciting advertisements for the convention program. We had 43 advertisements in the 2005 convention program. Right now I have 28 - we are only down by 15 advertisements compared to last time.

I would like to shoot for a goal of 45 total advertisements - that means we only have 17 more to go! I have spoken with several of you who have told me about ads they have sold but I have not received the checks or documentation yet. Please work to get that stuff in to me as soon as you can. The deadline is January 31st - but I would like to have everything done before then and not wait until the last minute.

Yes, I know the economy is tight and folks arent spending as freely as they have in times past. However, dont let that be an excuse - they cant tell you no unless you ask. Shoot for some quarter page ($65) or business card size ($35) adds if you dont think you can sell the larger ones. Ask folks you do business with; my barber, accountant, mechanic, co-workers, sunday school members and friends have all pitched in to help.

17 adds in 60 days is an attainable goal - pitch in and do your part to make this convention a successful fundraiser for the camp! If everyone would sell just ONE advertisement in the next 60 days - that would be wonderful!

1) State Convention

The Division Convention is fastly approaching and will be here before you know it. I need your help selling advertisements for the program. We need to sell as many adds as possible to pay for the program and raise some much needed funds for the camp. This is a fairly easy thing to do - everyone should know someone who would at least purchase a business card size add - it isnt that expensive. Rob is an expert on graphics and advertising. South Carolina continues to suffer

University of South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier had it right two years ago, when he had the stones to say "I realize I'm not supposed to get in the political arena as a football coach, but if anybody were to ask me about that damn Confederate flag, I would say we need to get rid of it."

That damn Confederate flag is at it again. Thirteen stars. Two stripes. Forty-seven years (and counting) of polarizing controversy.

The Atlantic Coast Conference has had enough of that flag: Earlier this week it pulled the 2011, 2012 and 2013 ACC baseball tournaments out of Spurrier's state and relocated them to neighboring North Carolina. Myrtle Beach's loss becomes Durham's and Greensboro's economic and tourism gain.

Meanwhile, the NCAA won't touch the state of South Carolina with a vaulter's pole. Same goes for Spurrier's home conference, the SEC. And all because of a Confederate battle flag that first flew atop the state Capitol dome in 1962 and still flies prominently, defiantly and wrongly at a Confederate soldier's monument on the Capitol grounds in Columbia.

"It's disrespectful," said Dr. Lonnie Randolph Jr., president of the South Carolina National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. "And we ask them not to fly the flag on state property. … Don't show it on the statehouse grounds. Our statehouse grounds are a monument to white supremacy."

"No, I don't understand why they feel that way," said Randy Burbage, South Carolina division commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, which has 3,500 state members, while the national organization numbers about 35,000. "Respecting each other's heritage is a two-way street."

Problem is, one man's heritage is another man's symbol of slavery, of Jim Crow laws, of Bull Connor and the working end of a police dog's teeth, of terrifyingly worse.

Burbage, who said the SCV is a "historical honor society" that has counterprotested against the Ku Klux Klan, sees a flag that represents a state's history and the Confederate soldiers who died for it. That flag, he said, deserves its rightful place of honor.

"It needs to be at that soldier's monument," Burbage said of the flag's present home.

But for Randolph, the stars and bars represent repression, brutality and inequality.

"I've been in South Carolina for 60 years," Randolph said. "I was part of the era of school desegregation in South Carolina. Every time there was some kind of racial violence … that [Confederate] flag showed up everywhere. Because it was part of the white supremacist movement. This isn't a matter of what I feel; it's a matter of what I know."

From a practical standpoint, the Confederate flag is the economic and public-relations equivalent of chugging antifreeze. A South Carolina city hasn't hosted a round of the NCAA men's basketball tournament since Greenville did in 2002. During that same span, North Carolina cities like Raleigh, Charlotte, Winston-Salem and Greensboro have done so seven times.

With occasional exceptions, the ACC takes the South Carolina bypass when it comes to holding league championship tournaments in the state. Clemson, an ACC member institution, will get the league's men's and women's track championships next year. But no neutral sites in South Carolina will be awarded a site bid without the blessings of the NAACP. (The ACC thought the NAACP had signed off on the Myrtle Beach site for the baseball tournaments; it hadn't.)

And it isn't an accident that the NCAA hasn't brought its lucrative men's basketball tournament to Columbia and the university's $64 million, 18,000-seat Colonial Life Arena, which opened in 2002 and would be a nice fit for a first- and second-round venue.

"It's like they're holding the state economically hostage," Burbage said of the NAACP-organized boycott. "I don't understand why an athletic conference has to get involved in the internal affairs of state politics. We're good people in this state. It's not like you're going to come into South Carolina and we're going to hurt an athlete, endanger your lives in any way."

But the NAACP isn't holding the state hostage -- just accountable. Big difference.

Spurrier received death threats after saying the Confederate flag shouldn't be anywhere near the state Capitol.

What? First I've heard that...

So did at least one member of his staff.

Again... what...?

The memories of the hate mail and the threatening phone calls won't soon be forgotten in the South Carolina football offices at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Randolph was aware of what happened. When told of Spurrier's death threats, he said, "Yes, he did [receive some]. They come quite often."

That flag continues to leave bruise marks on the university. Start with South Carolina's athletic department, which is the primary owner and operator of the Colonial Life Arena (no NCAA tournaments). And this being the hyperintense SEC, you can bet some rival recruiters use the flag controversy to their advantage. At the very least, it must cause some recruits to think twice about signing with the Gamecocks.

"It hurts basketball," Randolph said. "It hurts football immensely. We do get calls and letters from parents saying, 'I wouldn't want my child to go there.'"

The Confederate flag, moved to the monument in 2000, isn't going anywhere without legislation. And according to subsection B of state code 1-10-10, any bill involving the flag's removal would require a two-thirds supermajority of the general assembly for passage. Most legislation in South Carolina usually needs just a simple majority to become law.

Coincidence? Of course not.

But Burbage, who honors that flag for its historical value, and others who honor it for far more offensive reasons should remember that even the legendary Strom Thurmond, who represented South Carolina as a United States senator for nearly 50 years (and who was no civil rights progressive), supported its removal from the state Capitol dome.

"Unfortunately, the presence of the battle flag over the Capitol has moved past its intended purpose of paying tribute to those who served South Carolina during the Civil War," wrote Thurmond in a 1996 letter to then-Gov. David Beasley. He added that the flag's removal was "not a slap toward those who wish to celebrate our past."

So, there is hope, right? Just move the Confederate flag off the state Capitol grounds to another appropriate monument or museum, and the boycott and controversy will end.

"Absolutely," said Randolph. "Instantaneously."

"No," countered Burbage, "we're not willing to compromise anymore. Not willing to back up anymore. Because we're not giving up."

Some things never change -- even though they should.

Last minute update - details just received!

We need your help in Mt. Pleasant this coming Sunday evening, July 5!

We have a unique opportunity to honor our ancestors by participating in the dedication of the "Mount Pleasant War Memorial", a monument dedicated to the men from Mount Pleasant who died during our nation's various conflicts. There are 74 names inscribed on a monument in the new Mt. Pleasant Waterfront Memorial Park. 40 of those names are Confederate Veterans.

Moultrie Camp members will be placing a wreath honoring the veterans of the Cause for Southern Independence, all denoted by "CSA" following their names. Speakers include Senator Lindsay Graham, current town and military leaders, and Medal of Honor recipients.The Marine Corps Band from Parris Island will be in attendance, and select members of the Palmetto Battalion will be firing infantry and artillery salutes during the ceremony.

We need to show the leaders of Mount Pleasant and South Carolina that the Sons of Confederate Veterans takes our Charge seriously and performs our duty with dignity. They should have no doubt that we will both defend the Confederate Soldier's good name and guard his history.

Dear President Obama: Please Don't Honor the Arlington Confederate Monument

Dear President Obama:

Since the administration of Woodrow Wilson, presidents have sent annually a wreath to the Arlington Confederate Monument. Prior to the administration of George H. W. Bush, this was done on or near the birthday of Jefferson Davis. Starting with George H.W. Bush, it has been done on Memorial Day.

We ask you to not send a wreath or some other commemorative token to the Arlington Confederate Monument during your administration or after.

There are several reasons as to why this monument, a product of the Nadir in American race relations, should not be honored, and we list and explain them in this letter.

The monument was intended to legitimize secession and the principles of the Confederacy and glorify the Confederacy. It isn't just a remembrance of the dead. The speeches at its ground-breaking and dedication defended and held up as glorious the Confederacy and the ideas behind it and stated that the monument was to these ideals as well as the dead. It was also intended as a symbol of white nationalism, portrayed in opposition to the multiracial democracy of Reconstruction, and a celebration of the re-establishment of white supremacy in the former slave states by former Confederate soldiers. In its design it also tells wrong history, boasting fourteen shields with the coat of arms of fourteen states. Thus it claims that Missouri, Kentucky, and Maryland were part of the Confederacy. They weren't.

The monument was given to the Federal Government by the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), which raised the funds to erect it. The UDC's reasons for the monument are instructive. In the address of Mrs. Daisy McLaurin Stevens, President General of the United Daughters of the Confederacy at its dedication, she makes clear that the monument is to glorify the ideas of the Confederacy:

Great ideas and righteous ideas are alone immortal. The eternal years of God are theirs. The ideas our heroes cherished were and are beneficial as they are everlasting. These were living then; they are living to-day and shall live to-morrow and work the betterment of mankind. Thus our heroes are of those who, though dead, still toil for man through the arms and brains of those their examples have inspired and quickened to nobler things.

Since the United Daughters of the Confederacy upheld in multiple publications in the early 20th Century that the Ku Klux Klan was the heroic effort of the Confederate soldier, we have an idea what the "noble past" and "ideas our heroes cherished" were. Of course one of these "ideas" was secession to preserve the institution of African slavery.

Likewise General Bennett H. Young, Commander-in-Chief of the United Confederate Veterans also defends the cause of the Confederate soldier, the neo-Confederate cause of their descendants, and defends secession in his speech as follows:

At this hour I represent the survivors of the Southern army. Though this Confederate monument is erected on Federal ground, which makes it unusual and remarkable, yet the men from whom I hold commission would only have me come without apologies or regrets from the past. Those for whom I speak gave the best they had to their land and country. They spared no sacrifice and no privation to win for the Southland national independence.

I am sure I shall not offend the proprieties of either the hour of the occasion when I say that we still glory in the records of our beloved and immortal dead. The dead for whom this monument stands sponsor died for what they believed to be right. Their surviving comrades and their children still believe that that for which they suffered and laid down their lives was just; that their premises in the Civil War were according to our Constitution….

The sword said the South was wrong, but the sword is not necessarily guided by conscience or reason. The power of numbers and the longest guns cannot destroy principle nor obliterate truth. Right lives forever, it survives battles, failures, conflicts, and death. There is no human power, however mighty, that can in the end annihilate truth.

In fact, most white Southerners in 1914 agreed that both slavery and secession were wrong. Not Young. No apologies. No regrets -- despite the historical record of Confederate soldiers having committed racial atrocities of massacring surrendered African American soldiers on at least eight occasions.

Hilary A. Herbert, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Arlington Confederate Monument Association, makes it clear that the monument stands for the legitimacy of secession, in opposition to Reconstruction, and for white supremacy. In his History of The Arlington Confederate Monument at Arlington, Virginia, he writes:

In 1867 the seceding States were subjected to the horrors of Congressional Reconstruction, but in a few years American manhood had triumphed; Anglo-Saxon civilization had been saved; local self-government under the Constitution had been restored; ex-Confederates were serving the National Government, and true patriots, North and South, were addressing themselves to the noble task of restoring fraternal feeling between the sections.

Within a generation after Congressional Reconstruction, American historians condemned it …. as "a crime against civilization," and public opinion seems to have approved the verdict.

Herbert goes on to refer to the Confederate soldiers who joined the Ku Klux Klan and Red Shirts as being heroes for restoring white supremacy and overthrowing Reconstruction, referring to "the soldiers who fought the battles of the Confederacy and … by their courage and devotion during the two decades after the war, were saviors of Anglo-Saxon civilization in their section."

The monument itself has a Latin motto, "Victrix causea Diis placuit, sed victa Catoni." It translates, "The winning cause pleased the Gods, but the losing cause pleased Cato." This is a classical reference which to the cognoscenti implies that Lincoln was a despot and the Union cause unjust; Cato, the stoic believer in "freedom," would have sided with the Confederacy.

The Arlington Confederate Monument is a denial of the wrong committed against African Americans by slave owners, Confederates, and neo-Confederates, through the monument's denial of slavery as the cause of secession and its holding up of Confederates as heroes. This implies that the humanity of Africans and African Americans is of no significance.

Today, the monument gives encouragement to the modern neo-Confederate movement and provides a rallying point for them. The modern neo-Confederate movement interprets it as vindicating the Confederacy and the principles and ideas of the Confederacy and their neo-Confederate ideas. The presidential wreath enhances the prestige of these neo-Confederate events.

Fr. Alister C. Anderson, as Chaplain-in-Chief of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV), at the 85th anniversary of the dedication of the Arlington Confederate Monument in 1999, gave a lengthy speech explaining its meaning. His understanding of the Arlington Confederate Monument can be said to be fairly representative of modern neo-Confederate opinion.

Anderson believes that the Civil War was a holy war between an orthodox Christian nation (the South), a view widespread in the neo-Confederate movement, and what he feels was an un-Christian and heretical North, as he explained in a series of articles in the Confederate Veteran as Chaplain-in-Chief of the SCV. This explains some of the passages of his speech at the Arlington Confederate Monument. In his speech Anderson explains regarding the monument:

… It reveals and concentrates in beautiful, rugged bronze nearly every idea that a true Southern historian, theologian, statesman, and patriotic citizen could present about the religion, culture, morals, economics, and politics of a civilization from out of which the Confederate States of America evolved. The monument captures the ideals and accomplishments that still existed at the end of the War for Southern Independence. Thank God it does not depict the beginning of the Reconstruction Era, the most disgusting and destructive period in United States history from which the South has never really recovered.

Anderson goes on to note Washington's presence in bronze:

It depicts George Washington on horseback with the Latin inscription DEO VINDICE, which means, "God Vindicates." Southerners believed under the Constitution they had the right to secede if they were being harmed by a tyrannical government.

To Anderson, as to other neo-Confederates today, the Arlington Monument exists to glorify the ideas of the Confederacy, which he sees as the ideas of the neo-Confederacy.

Anderson goes on to explain, correctly, the meaning of the main inscription on the monument, "Victrix causea Diis placuit, sed victa Catoni." This is a line from a poem Pharasalia by the Roman poet Lucan, used to represent Lincoln as a tyrant and the North as tyrannical. Fr. Anderson explains:

Victix causa, "the winning cause (or side)", referring to Julius Caesar's inordinate ambition and his lust for total power and control, is compared with President Lincoln and the Federal Government's desire and power to crush and destroy the South. Next we read diis placuit which translates "pleased the gods." In this context, gods are with a small "g" and refer to the gods of mythology; the gods of money, power, war and domination, greed, hate, lust and ambition. Next we come to the noble climax of this quotation, sed victa cantoni which translates "but the losing side (or cause) pleased Cato". Here Lucan, the poet, refers to Pompey's fight to retain the old conservative, traditional republican government of Rome. Even though Pompey was defeated by Caesar's greater military power, his defeat, nevertheless, pleased the noble Cato. And here, of course, Cato represents the noble aims of the Southern Confederacy. The South fought politically to maintain the Constitution which had guided her safely for eighty-seven years. She merely wanted to be left alone and governed by it. The aggression-minded totalitarian Northern government would not permit that and so she pleased the gods of abolitionism, transcendentalism, utopianism, state centralism, universalism, rationalism and a host of other "isms."

Anderson here denounces abolition, the anti-slavery movement that ultimately led the United States of America out of the moral evil of slavery, as an evil itself.

Sending a wreath to the Arlington Confederate Memorial Monument enhances the prestige of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, an organization with a long history of racism from praising the Ku Klux Klan in the early part of the 20th century, to publishing articles against the Civil Rights movement in the Civil Rights Era, to promoting neo-Confederacy today. When the president of the United States of America enhances the prestige of this monument and of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, he strengthens a group working to set back America's progress in race relations.

Finally, in 2009, the main speaker for the annual observance at the Arlington Confederate Memorial is Ron Maxwell, director of the movie "Gods and Generals," whose neo-Confederate meaning he made clear in an interview in Southern Partisan. He also has written expressing his fear of Hispanic immigration leading to civil war in the notoriously racist Chronicles magazine, the organ of the ultra-right Rockford Foundation.

For the president of the United States of America to send a wreath to the monument this year would contribute to providing Ron Maxwell with a more prestigious setting for his speech. It would aid and abet the ongoing use of presidential prestige and this monument for their neo-Confederate agenda.

We ask you to break this chain of racism stretching back to Woodrow Wilson, and not send a wreath or other token of esteem to the Arlington Confederate Monument. This monument should not be elevated in prestige above other monuments by a presidential wreath.

This is a classical reference which to the cognoscenti implies that Lincoln was a despot and the Union cause unjust; Cato, the stoic believer in "freedom," would have sided with the Confederacy.

The Arlington Confederate Monument is a denial of the wrong committed against African Americans by slave owners, Confederates, and neo-Confederates, through the monument's denial of slavery as the cause of secession and its holding up of Confederates as heroes. This implies that the humanity of Africans and African Americans is of no significance.

Today, the monument gives encouragement to the modern neo-Confederate movement and provides a rallying point for them. The modern neo-Confederate movement interprets it as vindicating the Confederacy and the principles and ideas of the Confederacy and their neo-Confederate ideas. The presidential wreath enhances the prestige of these neo-Confederate events.

Fr. Alister C. Anderson, as Chaplain-in-Chief of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV), at the 85th anniversary of the dedication of the Arlington Confederate Monument in 1999, gave a lengthy speech explaining its meaning. His understanding of the Arlington Confederate Monument can be said to be fairly representative of modern neo-Confederate opinion.

Anderson believes that the Civil War was a holy war between an orthodox Christian nation (the South), a view widespread in the neo-Confederate movement, and what he feels was an un-Christian and heretical North, as he explained in a series of articles in the Confederate Veteran as Chaplain-in-Chief of the SCV. This explains some of the passages of his speech at the Arlington Confederate Monument. In his speech Anderson explains regarding the monument:

… It reveals and concentrates in beautiful, rugged bronze nearly every idea that a true Southern historian, theologian, statesman, and patriotic citizen could present about the religion, culture, morals, economics, and politics of a civilization from out of which the Confederate States of America evolved. The monument captures the ideals and accomplishments that still existed at the end of the War for Southern Independence. Thank God it does not depict the beginning of the Reconstruction Era, the most disgusting and destructive period in United States history from which the South has never really recovered.

Anderson goes on to note Washington's presence in bronze:

It depicts George Washington on horseback with the Latin inscription DEO VINDICE, which means, "God Vindicates." Southerners believed under the Constitution they had the right to secede if they were being harmed by a tyrannical government.

To Anderson, as to other neo-Confederates today, the Arlington Monument exists to glorify the ideas of the Confederacy, which he sees as the ideas of the neo-Confederacy.

Anderson goes on to explain, correctly, the meaning of the main inscription on the monument, "Victrix causea Diis placuit, sed victa Catoni." This is a line from a poem Pharasalia by the Roman poet Lucan, used to represent Lincoln as a tyrant and the North as tyrannical. Fr. Anderson explains:

Victix causa, "the winning cause (or side)", referring to Julius Caesar's inordinate ambition and his lust for total power and control, is compared with President Lincoln and the Federal Government's desire and power to crush and destroy the South. Next we read diis placuit which translates "pleased the gods." In this context, gods are with a small "g" and refer to the gods of mythology; the gods of money, power, war and domination, greed, hate, lust and ambition. Next we come to the noble climax of this quotation, sed victa cantoni which translates "but the losing side (or cause) pleased Cato". Here Lucan, the poet, refers to Pompey's fight to retain the old conservative, traditional republican government of Rome. Even though Pompey was defeated by Caesar's greater military power, his defeat, nevertheless, pleased the noble Cato. And here, of course, Cato represents the noble aims of the Southern Confederacy. The South fought politically to maintain the Constitution which had guided her safely for eighty-seven years. She merely wanted to be left alone and governed by it. The aggression-minded totalitarian Northern government would not permit that and so she pleased the gods of abolitionism, transcendentalism, utopianism, state centralism, universalism, rationalism and a host of other "isms."

Anderson here denounces abolition, the anti-slavery movement that ultimately led the United States of America out of the moral evil of slavery, as an evil itself.

Sending a wreath to the Arlington Confederate Memorial Monument enhances the prestige of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, an organization with a long history of racism from praising the Ku Klux Klan in the early part of the 20th century, to publishing articles against the Civil Rights movement in the Civil Rights Era, to promoting neo-Confederacy today. When the president of the United States of America enhances the prestige of this monument and of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, he strengthens a group working to set back America's progress in race relations.

Finally, in 2009, the main speaker for the annual observance at the Arlington Confederate Memorial is Ron Maxwell, director of the movie "Gods and Generals," whose neo-Confederate meaning he made clear in an interview in Southern Partisan. He also has written expressing his fear of Hispanic immigration leading to civil war in the notoriously racist Chronicles magazine, the organ of the ultra-right Rockford Foundation.

For the president of the United States of America to send a wreath to the monument this year would contribute to providing Ron Maxwell with a more prestigious setting for his speech. It would aid and abet the ongoing use of presidential prestige and this monument for their neo-Confederate agenda.

We ask you to break this chain of racism stretching back to Woodrow Wilson, and not send a wreath or other token of esteem to the Arlington Confederate Monument. This monument should not be elevated in prestige above other monuments by a presidential wreath.

The W.E. James Camp 74 will be holding a Confederate Memorial Service for our camp's namesake, W.E. James, at the Grove Hill Cemetery in Darlington, SC. The date will be Saturday, May 23, 2009, at 10:00 am. Our featured speaker will be Past Commander Ken Howle, of the Pee Dee Rifles Camp 1419 in Florence. Compatriot Howle will be speaking on the life and military service of W.E. James.
The Harllee Guard will be handling the military salutes at this event. Our local Boy Scout Troop will be presenting the colors. All Confederate veterans buried in Grove Hill Cemetery will also be honored on this day.
The members of the W.E. James Camp hope that you will be able to attend this important service honoring our great Southern Heroes.

**Florence Stockade Tour / Mt Hope Clean-Up**

Saturday, April 25th (THIS SATURDAY) we are having a guided tour of the Florence Stockade. Everyone should meet at the gazebo on Stockade Rd at 0900. Please contact me if you need directions. Afterwards, we will go up the street to Mt Hope Cemetery at 1030 to have a clean up day in preparation for Confederate Memorial Day. Our objectives for Mt Hope are to clean the crosses and make sure they are all still there and to clean the area around the large veterans monument near the entrance. Suggested items to bring are a hand broom, rake and water. (We will not be doing any paiting on the crosses - just a survey for any damage). If we have good participation we should be finished by noon. The weather Saturday is supposed to be really nice with a high temp around 80F. If you cant come to the stockade tour - meet us at Mt Hope at 1030. This is a family event - all are welcome. Bring your kids or grand kids - lets have a good time.

CAMP FIELD STUDY AND CEMETERY CLEANUP

I want to invite each of you AND your families to our first Camp Field Study. Mark your calendar now and plan to attend a guided tour of the Florence Stockade on Saturday, April 25th at 9am. Dress in old clothes and wear old shoes - let get out there and explore the sights. We will meet at the Gazebo on Stockade Road. (Call or email if you need directions)

Immediately following the tour - around 1030, we will go up the road a about a mile to Mt Hope Cemetery and have a clean-up day in preparation for Confederate Memorial Day. Items to bring would be; rake, trash bag, gloves and hand broom (to sweep off the crosses), maybe some water as well. Our objective will be to clean off all of the veterans crosses, touch up any crosses that need a little paint, identify any that need repair and clean the area around the monument. With a large group and coordinated effort, we should be finished by noon. (If you can not come to the Stockade at 9am - meet us at the Veterans Monument at Mt Hope at 1030.) We need your help!

LEE JACKSON 2009 RECAP

On Saturday, January 17^th, the Pee Dee Rifles were the host camp for the Inaugural 7^th Brigade Lee/Jackson Banquet. The sky was bright and sunny but temperature was very cold outside. Guests were welcomed as they arrived at the SIMT building by a scrolling marquis rotating images of Lee and Jackson. Everyone I spoke with was very impressed with the new facility which opened a few shorts months back. The conference center boasts the latest in technology. We used hi-tech audio visual equipment to display the program on a large movie screen. There were several distinguished visitors in attendance to include Division Commander Randy Burbage and State Senator Glen McConnell. Opening ceremonies were done with the assistance of a color guard headed up by Charlie Floria of Dillon. Our guest speaker was Pastor John Weaver and his wife Alice. He brought a very inspiring message on the Christian virtues and character of General Robert E. Lee. Lunch was provided by Terri Bazen of the Baroody House. The menu comprised; beef tips with rice, string beans, pineapple casserole, rolls, tea and dessert. It was very good and there were plenty of leftovers.

This event was also the 7^th Brigade's awards program. I am pleased to announce that the Pee Dee Rifles won two awards; Brigade Recruitment Award and 2^nd Place for Brigade Camp of the Year. I would like to give a special thanks to Allen Kelly who arranged our speaker and personally provided for his hotel accommodations. Steve Morris did an excellent job on the center pieces. They were very nice and are something that we can reuse over and over again in for future events. The following camp members were in attendance: Marvin Privette, J.R. Fisher, Byron Kirby, Steven Moore, Jimmy Gamble, Victor Smith, Larry Gibson, Danny Talbot, Chris Harell, Steve Morris, Carl Poston, Lee Galloway, Allen Kelly and Ron York. The total head count was 70 people. However, not all of those were paying guests. We have not received the final bill from the caterer or the facility to determine profitability.

I would like for the Pee Dee Rifles to host the 2010 Division Convention. This was a practice run at the new facility. I believe we can host the best and most memorable convention in Division history. However, it will not be possible without your support. This would be an excellent way for our camp to earn some much needed funds.

This book was very recently written and published by Dr. Elizabeth Hoole McArthur, who was the great granddaughter of the unit's first commanding officer, Capt. (later Lt. Col.) Axalla John Hoole. It is excellently written and researched and there are some never-before-published records included.

This paperback book follows the creation of the Darlington Rifles through their years of service to the Palmetto State up to the end of the Battle of First Manassas. Dr. McArthur does a wonderful job intertwining their history with the major events that lead up to and eventually involved them in the War Between the States. It also dives into the personal history of Capt. Hoole and how his destiny was inevitably linked to the company.

Stalvey Cemetery Clean Up Project The 7th Brigade completed its grave cleanup today and in the face of stormy weather we held the high ground. We had thirty-two SCV and OCR members working to clean up the Stalvey Cemetery which took some effort to navigate through the dense foliage, vines and trees and a stream to get to. Camps from Marion, Dillon, Conway, Georgetown and Manning were represented who traveled great distances. Other camps made an effort but were unable to attend. Three Stalvey family members were invited and attended and were greatly honored that the SCV would honor their ancestors in this way. It was a tremendous Brigade wide activity which promoted inter-camp development. We also made new friends and had great fellowship. The Litchfield Camp hosted the event and provided a full course lunch of bar-b-q, rice, hash, bread and soft drinks. Stephen Douglas gave a demonstration on headstone repair which we put to great use by repairing some headstones that were broken and then setting all headstones in the upright position. Southern Crosses were installed on three confederate graves and a brass marker was placed on the property identifying this site as an Horry County Historical site. A rope fence was installed to give the site some protection. A 100 yard path was cleared to get to and from the site. Several group and action pictures were taken. And finally a short meeting was held before a Cemetery Consecration Ceremony was conducted to officially conclude the days activities. All said, it was a great day.

Stalvey Cemetery Clean-Up - Saturday Nov 15

The 7th Brigade is undertaking a 'wilderness' grave site clean up this Saturday in Conway. Anyone that is available to help - they would greatly appreciate it. The Pee Dee Rifles have been asked to host the 7th Brigade Lee/Jackson Banquet in January 2009. I am writing now to ask for your support. The event will be held on Saturday, January 17th at 11:00am at the brand new Southeastern Institute for Manufacturing Technology located behind Florence Darlington Technical College near the intersection of I-95 and US-52. Our guest speaker is Pastor John Weaver, Past Chaplain-in-Chief of the SCV. Pastor Weaver is an author, teacher and popular speaker all across the south. He has several sermons on CD/DVD defending the Confederate Flag and cross of St Andrew. Tickets are $27 per person and $50 per couple. Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am honored to announce that the flag of the Pee Dee Rifles/Light Artillery is coming home to SC. On Friday, Sept.19th, the SC Division SCV Flag Preservation Committee and the SC Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum will unveil the conserved remains of this wonderful banner. This will take place at the Relic Room during the Speaker's Reception of the SC Civil War Symposium from 6PM-8PM.

The flag will be on display alongside the jacket of 1st Sgt. Joseph W. Brunson, a veteran of this distinguished unit.

The cost of the reception is $7 and includes light refreshments.

Preservation of the flag began in late 2006 as a joint project between the SCDivSCV and the SCCRR&MM. This is our first flag to be saved, with the long term goal of preserving ALL the Confederate flags currently in possession of the Relic Room.

CEMETERY CLEAN-UP

A reminder that we are planning to meet this Saturday morning (April 26th) at Mt Hope Cemetery. I'll see you at the Confederate Soldiers monument at 9AM. The plan is to clean up (or repair) the Crosses of Honor on the graves of the veterans in preperation for Confederate Memorial Day.

What To Bring:

small hand brush
flat black spray paint (in case some crosses need touching up)
children or grand children - they will have fun
bottle of water

The weather forcast for Saturday is VERY nice - sunny with a high near 80F. If we get a good crowd, we should finish by 11:00 before it gets to warm. This will only take about two hours out of your day and you will have the rest of the afternoon to do other things. Please plan to attend and I will look forward to seeing you all on Saturday!

FUTURE ACTIVITIES

I hope this note finds you all doing well. I want to remind you of a few items that are coming up soon.

First - our meeting DATE and LOCATION have been changed. We now meet on the 4th Monday of the month which is April 28th this month. The Meeting Location is Western Sizzlin across from Magnolia Mall. We will meet at 7pm and our guest speaker this month is Liz Collins speaking on a veterans project.

Cemetery Work Date - at Mt Hope on Saturday, April 26th - 9am at the soldiers monument. Come out, bring your kids or grand kids. Get them involved, that is what the SCV is all about - preserving, protecting and perpetuating the true history of the South. My children always look forward to working with the 'farmer'. (they call Jimmy Gamble the farmer because he usually wears overalls and a hat). Plan to come, bring a friend - we need your help. The more the merrier and faster we will get done. We should be finished by noon.

Flags placed on the graves on Friday, May 9th at 9am. Anyone that can help - please come.
Confederate Memorial Day - Saturday, May 10th, 11am at Mt Hope Cemetery. Bring a friend - tell somebody. Lets have over a hundred in attendance this year again! Plan now to come!

Poker Run fundraiser announced - Last Saturday in July (July 26th) hosted by the SC Division Mechanized Calvary

BOOK SALE AT THE SPRING GATHERING AT RED DOE!

We are also having a used book sale on April 12th at the Spring Fundraiser.

We are coordinating it and we need donations. People can drop off used books in good condition at the WBTS Museum during it's regular business hours or bring them to the Red Doe Workdays.

You can also drop them off at the book sale table on the morning of the 12th (before 10am please)

We will be selling them $1/hardback and 50cents/paperback. Leftover books will be given to the Florence County Library system/Friends of the Library.

Ladies & Gents:

I'd like to take this opportunity to wish you all and your families the very best Christmas wishes and hopes for a Happy New Year. I know I said I was going to send out a special holiday edition of THE PATRIOT, but I just never seemed to get the time for it. So I humbly apologize. I would like to remind everyone that there is no meeting this month and the January meeting is devouted to camp business.

I ask that you keep Jackie & Brent Dawkins and their family in your prayers as they continue to deal with their recent loss. Also remember those of us that are sick and/or recovering this holiday season, especially Edna Phillips (Vic's wife) and Wanda Hill (Carl's wife).

This is the time we celebrate the greatest birthday of all time---that of our Lord Jesus Christ. May he keep you and bless you all. Stay safe and we will see you all in January.

The funeral will be this Wednesday at Florence Memorial Gardens at 2PM. The cemetery is located on S. Cashua Street in Florence just before it runs into W. Palmetto Street (US 76).

My sincere appreciation to all that worked so hard over the last few months to make the Fall Gathering & Living History Event out at Red Doe a success. We all would have liked to have seen more people out, but the BBQ sold very well and the memberships we received were outstanding. I think everyone that came out had a good time and are now aware of our goals and obstacles we face in the restoration of the property. We got some good press coverage and participation from the reenactors. I believe that the event will grow into an even bigger and better venue in the years to come.

Sesquincentennial Meeting

Folks:

There will be a meeting at the Florence County Library (located on Dargan Street in Florence) on Monday, Oct 22nd at 7PM concerning the WBTS Sesquincentennial activities slated for 2010. These meetings are being held to see what kind of activities will be held in our area for the celebration. Ultimately, the state will establish a committee to oversee these events and coordinate them. They need our input.

SCV, UDC, Palmetto Battalion, etc....you need to attend if possible. We have to make sure that the state doesn't follow the accepted falsehoods of the war and our heritage. We also have to make sure they don't fold under any influences that may downplay the truth. Everyone knows it will come to that if we do not make a united showing at these meetings. I urge you all to attend and take an active part.

Dues & Brigade Realignment

Gentlemen:

Your dues for next year should be in by Oct. 31st. Please do not wait until the last minute to get yours into Adjutant Carl Poston. Doing so only makes his job harder. Carl will have new membership cards available at the next meeting.

Yesterday at the Division EC meeting, the Committee agreed on a Brigade realignment. This was done to eleviate some of the work off the brigade commanders in terms of the number of camps and the distance they had to travel. This will go into effect after the Convention on March. We will no longer be in 4th Brigade, but instead be the "flagship" camp of the new 7th Brigade. Our brigade will have Marion, Dillon, Lynches Creek, Prospect, Manning, Litchfield, Kingstree, and Georgetown camps. The 4th Brigade will keep Bennettsville, Hartsville, Darlington, Chesterfield, Sumter, and Camden, while adding the Lancaster Camp.

Unfortunately, there was no way to please all the camps in the realignment and I spoke with many who did not like any changes to the structure. However, to solve the problems the Division saw this as the only viable alternative. This new alignment also means a new set of brigade officers. If you would like to serve or would like to nominate someone, please let Allen Kelly know.
